Market Harborough Lions Club
The men's club was formed in 1974 and currently has 18 members. We meet on two evenings each month: On the first Tuesday we hold a Business Meeting and on the third Tuesday, we have a social get-together.
A mixed gender Club was formed in 2005 to develop club membership including Ladies. The mixed gender Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month and has similar social activities.
What do we do?
The purpose of a Lions Club is to put something back into the community and to have some fun whilst doing it. So we look for suitable causes, raise the funds to support them. To make sure it's not all work and no play, we also arrange social events. All members of the Club are involved in organising one of these three activities
The causes we support.
Over the past couple of years we have provided funds through our International Foundation to assist in the various natural disasters around the world. Amongst many other donations we have also sponsored young people in their international activities and provided tabards for a school orchestra.
Raising the money.
In order to pay for these projects, we've organised fund raising events such as arranging the delivery of local Christmas cards, a Charity Golf Tournament, and Target Bowls. Each year, between our two Clubs, we raise in excess of £8,000.
Fun and Fellowship
are the bedrock of Lionism and without them the enthusiasm for the other activities would soon wane. To make sure we get the work:play balance right, our Social Committee is responsible for arranging a modestly priced monthly Social Meeting where Lions are often joined by their wives/partners and friends. Recent events have included a Quiz night with Fish & Chips, a BBQ, indoor bowling, and a Harborough film event. Small groups of Lions also meet regularly for indoor bowls, golf and bridge.
